Franchises In The Uk Market: Previous Experience Necessary?
By Michiel Van Kets
The number of franchises in the UK increases every day as awareness of the market grows and more people choose to opt out of the traditional 9-5 work routine and work for themselves. Due to this expansion, there is now a broad range of franchise business ventures becoming available on the market and profitable franchises with realistic and provable income opportunities are in high demand. Investing in your own business is a daunting decision with challenges to face, both physically and emotionally, the work load and level of responsibility are high and commitment has to be 100%, however previous experience isn’t always necessary as there is a lot of guidance and help on offer.

People often don’t consider franchise opportunities as a viable option to them as they have no previous experience of setting up and running their own business. Whilst previous experience can be helpful and an added bonus the principles are the same as with any business idea, hard work, enthusiasm and commitment. A positive attitude and willingness to work hard in order to make the business work are crucial, franchising is not an easy choice and can fail just like any other unsuccessful operation. Be prepared for a lot of hard labour to make it succeed.

When you’re looking for a franchise opportunities don't worry too much if you don't have the necessary skills required, this is the case with the majority of franchisees. Less than half of people who have a fast food franchise had previous experience in preparing and selling burgers. The franchisor should offer enough support and training to provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to make your business a success.

Good franchisors will provide all the training, preparation and marketing you need. It is in their interests to help you out as much as they can as a successful business for you will benefit them too. You will pay a regular fee for this management service so make the most of their valuable experience and knowledge. Assistance will begin from the basics, help in putting together the business plan, selecting appropriate location and site, marketing techniques, and carry on through to negotiating funding packages with lenders. Telephone support will always be accessible. If your franchise is IT based or in a specialist area then trained staff, technical support and expert advisors will be available to deal with your questions. Franchisors understand that the more help and sound, practical advice and training provided in the first few months are critical to the success of the business and realise that as time goes by their help and guidance can be withdrawn slowly, replaced by a more general support programme, as the franchisee become adept in their business.

Whether you have to be involved with creating sales and the marketing of your service or product will depend on the kind of franchise you are buying into and the position you have within it. In some areas franchisees will be required to generate business and people with some knowledge or experience in sales and marketing will have an advantage; however in others, such as job franchises, the franchisor takes responsibility for securing accounts leaving the franchisee to focus on providing a quality service. Also, some management franchises take some responsibility for these areas thus allowing their franchisees to apply their time to building the infrastructure of the business.

The franchise sector in the UK is rapidly growing and there is an increasing demand for franchisees out there. While your franchise area, site location and the economic market will be big factors in the success of your business, individual hard work and dedication will be major and contributing factors too. When you own a franchise you will be your own boss, but you won’t be on your own, you will have the comfort of knowing there is a support system to help you make your business a success.
