The Importance Of Electricians
By Elizabeth Morgan, Fri Dec 9th

Ever since Benjamin Franklin went outside with his kite during athunderstorm, electricity has ruled the world. All you have todo to understand this is to remember what it was like the lasttime your power went out for an evening. Nothing worked. Nocomputer, no refrigerator and more importantly, no TV.Electricity runs everything important in our lives and when itmalfunctions, somebody has to fix it, somebody who knows whatthey’re doing, that is. Electricity has the power to run thingswhen it works smoothly, but, it can also burn things and killpeople if misused. Of all the household accidents in thiscountry, home electrical repairs ranks second in accidents rightbehind falling off ladders - only home electrical repairaccidents are more deadly than falling off ladders.

Good electricians are highly trained individuals with a lot ofschooling and practical experience behind them. Before you gosticking your hand into a fuse box, or rewiring the house forpower, you have to know a lot about electrical power – the wayit moves, how it does what it does, the math and physics behindit and a lot of other things. Everybody feels like a bit of anelectrician simply by changing that blown fuse or pluggingthings in just right or wiring up that complicatedTV/VCR/DVD/stereo entertainment center you’ve just bought. Youwire it up, plug it in and somehow it all works without anysparks or problems and you feel like you could have been anelectrician if you’d really wanted to. Wrong. There is a worldof difference between plugging things in and being anelectrician.

To begin with the body of mathematics behind electrical work isimpressive. Electricity is measured in volts and is a functionof voltage, current and resistance - all factors with a complexmathematical relationship. There are laws, not the buildingcodes set in place by municipal governments to insure the safetyof houses and commercial buildings, but mathematical laws provenwith chalkboards of bizarre looking figures that prove howelectricity will function under different circumstances. Andthere are unions. In fact the Electrical Workers Union (EWU) isone of the strongest unions in America protecting the integrityof the profession from scammers and schemers.
