12 types of bacteria of the 100 trillion which are found in our mouth are known to be the culprits for tooth decay, after Mr. Shi found that licorice has an active ingredient which focuses only on those 12 types of bacteria and kills them, he proceeded to extract and isolate the active compounds, this active compounds were then used to create a lollipop which is sweet (but has no sugar) enhance the active ingredient which helps fight cavities and general tooth decay.
Finding the active ingredients in licorice was a great step because they only kill the "Streptococcus mutans" and leave all other types of bacteria which are actually beneficial to us; it's like trying to kill the weeds around your beautiful flowers, you need to find an active ingredient which will only kill the weeds and not your flowers, Mr. Shi's work came across the one active ingredient which does to job as it should be.
This is without a doubt a great development which will help children fight cavities and tooth decay by doing the one thing they like the most at that age which is to lick their lollipops and eat candy.
