Bariatric Surgery Centers In The U.s.
By Eddie Tobey, Thu Dec 8th

According to the American College of Surgeons, most severelyobese patients fail to maintain a normal, healthy weight withoutnon-surgical means. Because surgery holds the key to success forso many obese Americans, it is helpful to learn about prominentbariatric surgery centers.

Many hospitals and medical centers now have bariatric surgerycenters onsite. These centers do more than just performsurgeries; many offer a multidisciplinary approach, includingthe expertise of surgeons, psychologists, registered dietitians, physical therapists, exercise physiologist, meditationspecialists, and others. Some centers will also communicate withthe patient’s insurance company for the pre-approval and appealprocess. Most provide ongoing medical check-ups to monitorpatient health and weight-loss post-operatively.

On occasion, bariatric surgical centers will partner with othersto form a cooperative, essentially doubling the services theycan provide and the number of patients they can assist. Manyalso contract with contract with financial institutions to offerfinancial assistance to patients who do not have insurance butwho still want bariatric surgery.

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) recommends choosing abariatric center that completes at least 125 bariatric surgeriesper year. According to the ACS, well-equipped centers willtypically have two or more bariatric surgeons on staff, andhighly experienced surgeons would be certified by the AmericanBoard of Surgery and complete at least fifty bariatricoperations per year.

There are bariatric surgery centers located across the entirecountry. Prominent bariatric surgery centers include the AlsamBariatric Center, the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Center ofExcellence P.C., the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the Hackensack Bariatric Surgery Center, the Bariatric Instituteof Kentucky, and the California Institute of Minimally InvasiveSurgery’s Advanced Bariatric Surgery Center of Fresno, amongmany others.
