How To Be Selective In A Background Check?
By Robert Boughner
Background checks can give you access to hundreds of databases containing different kinds of information about a person. If you are not discriminating about your search, you could end up with a useless pool of data. The entire process could be a total waste of your time and effort. So always be selective in your search. Bear in mind that the type of data that you need in a search can vary according to use.

In background checks for pre-employment, employers should first make an SSN check using an applicant’s Social Security Number. Although you can only come up with very basic information, a discrepancy between this data and that given to you by an applicant could say a lot about the applicant’s credibility.

Second, employers should check warrant and criminal records. Both records are needed because crimes that are still under investigation do not usually appear in a criminal record but are reflected in a warrant record. This will make the search comprehensive and complete.

And lastly, employers should check the applicant’s financial records. Financial reports would usually contain bankruptcy and credit records. This type of search is especially important in jobs where employers will be given responsibility to manage the company’s finances.

A single criminal background check may require you to look for different types of records. If you don’t have the time to search these records yourself, you can always employ background check services that can provide you with all the needed information you need at one time.
