Why Are Some Online Degree Colleges Better Than Others?
By Rose Musyoka, Sat Dec 10th

Any student who is on the lookout for online degree collegeswould probably have been swamped with the many options marketedto them over the internet. Therefore, it is not a wonder thatmany students feel confused on the right college selection asthey may not know the way to nail down the advantages thatcertain colleges have over others. Although many renownedcolleges charge higher fees for their courses, the extra costsincurred may not necessarily be justified by the facilities, recognition and educational value that they provide tostudents.

For one thing, different online colleges areaccredited by different authorities. Therefore, it is importantto find out whether the degrees offered are actually accreditedby the relevant educational association for your particularstate. Otherwise, you may end up having a degree that is notvalid and be rejected by your employers. There are also timeswhen colleges may be in the process of getting accredited. Therefore, this information is important to you as theirapplications for accreditation may be rejected by theauthorities later.

One of the qualifying factors thatcan be utilized by students to make correct enrolment decisionsis by determining the type of college accreditation that hasbeen received by their college of consideration. If the collegevaguely states itself as having “nationwide or worldwideaccreditation” without stating specifically which regionalaccreditation body it is accredited with, then most likely thiscollege does not possess legitimate accreditation.

Once you are certain of a college’s accreditation, you shouldthen determine the history of the college. How many studentshave graduated as compared to the enrollment numbers? How longhas the course been offered? Answering these questions will giveyou an idea on the level of experience and expertise that thecollege has to offer for the particular course you want. Afterall, you are paying them for online education and deserve to getvalue for your money.

Apart from that, different colleges will have lecturers ofdifferent educational levels. Of course, it would be best that acollege have more lecturers with Ph.D. qualifications. Mostlecturers should at least possess a Master’s Degree in order forthem to qualify teaching an undergraduate course. Again, thequality and quantity of lecturers will give you a good gauge onthe standards of the college.

You can also check on the lecturer-student ratio that thecollege is proposing. In order for online education to besuccessful, the lecturer-student ratio should ideally be low.Better colleges will recognize the importance of this, and willensure that they don’t over-enroll their online students so asto maintain the quality level of their courses. With a low rationumber, students will be assured of having adequate time to workwith lecturers.

Apart from that, different colleges impose different rules ontheir students. For example, some colleges allow students to goon overdrive mode and complete their credit hours over a shorterperiod of time. On the other hand, other colleges have a minimumcourse study period that a student has to adhere to andtherefore will not be allowed to accelerate or take up extracredit hours for the course. There is good and bad to both ofthese scenarios as certain colleges want to ensure quality bynot allowing students to sacrifice quality for speed ofcompletion. It is therefore up to the discretion of the studentto determine if slowing down on their course would be acceptableto their circumstances.

Finally, always ask for ahotline number from the online college that you are planning toenroll in. Legitimate colleges will have a number and someonequalified to answer your questions whenever you need help. Callthem up before you enroll and test them out by asking a coupleof questions. Also, check with them on other numbers and thesuitable time that you can call should you encounter problemswith your coursework. Through practical experience and gutfeeling, you will then be able to make the right decision onchoosing the right college for your online educationexperience.
